How to Wash Hair Extensions

It is important to maintain your hair extensions at home with correct aftercare. Ensure you use the appropriate products for hair extensions to help boost the longevity of the hair and help maintain its nourishment. Follow these steps to help guide you when it comes to washing and looking after your hair extensions.

Step 1 — Begin with a shampoo and conditioner that is hair extension approved. Always shampoo hair twice as the first breaks down environmental dirt build-up and the second cleanses the hair.

Step 2 — Condition mid-length and ends avoiding the root area with the conditioner. Conditioner at the roots can increase the chance of slippage and is not needed due to natural oil production maintaining conditioned roots. Allow the conditioner to hydrate the hair for 3–5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly out.

Step 3 — Pat towel dry your hair to help remove the excess water. Avoid rubbing your hair extensions harshly with a towel. Do not wrap wet hair up on the top of your head in a towel.

Step 5 — Blow dry the roots of the hair. It is important to dry off the roots of the hair extensions where they are attached to your natural hair before you brush your hair. Wet roots can increase the chances of a hair extension slipping out during brushing or whilst styling. So, help keep those extensions in by ensuring the roots are dried off before brushing. You can leave the rest of the hair to dry naturally once roots are dried off or you can choose to finish off your blow dry. Make sure hair is fully dry before bed.
