Hair Extensions Changing Colour

Hair extensions do require clients to follow the aftercare to ensure the longevity and help protect against colour discolouration. Colour discolouration can happen for some clients with hair extensions due to the hair extensions being more porous and is more seen in lighter hair extension colours.

Note: Discolouration is not due to faulty hair extensions and does not reflect hair extension quality. Natural hair discolours from the same contributing factors, but it is more noticed on hair extensions due to porosity.

Discolouration can happen due to several contributing factors. Blonde hair extensions can go a pinkish/orange tone and darker tones brassier. So, it is important to know what can cause this to help reduce the impact on your hair extension colour.

Chlorine

Chlorine has a huge impact on hair colour and particularly for our lighter haired ladies. It is a harsh chemical that is drying on your hair, so try to avoid chlorine in your hair. Chlorine will only speed up how dry your hair extensions become from day-to-day wear and strip out colour.

Sun exposure

Sun exposure can also increase colour fade due to the harsh UV rays. Especially when clients choose to put an oil or serum in the hair extensions and then go in the sun. You are essentially making it easier for the sun to target and strip colour from the hair. We recommend a leave-in cream moisturiser over a serum or oil-based hair product. And try protecting your hair extensions from too much sun exposure. Wearing hats and plaits would be our hair tip also.

Salt water

Salt water can dry hair extensions and fade colour more due to hair extensions not being able to produce their own sebum and protect the hair from the salt water. Really try reducing salt water on hair extensions and if entering the water try to use a hair extension moisturiser on the mid length and ends of the hair to help protect the hair and keep it more hydrated. Wash and dry hair with approved hair extension shampoo and conditioner when you get home and rinse thoroughly.

Hard water

Hard water is water that contains minerals such as magnesium and calcium. These minerals can cause colour discolouration and it is important to try and avoid the exposure to the hair extensions. Unfortunately, some clients have hard water at home, so in order to combat the colour discolouration on the hair extensions, we recommend a shower filter to help. If mild colour discolouration still occurs, purple shampoo or a clarifying shampoo can help combat and neutralise tones again to their original state. Hard water colour discolouration is more common when clients go on holidays.

Correcting unwanted tones

Orange or pinkish tone hair extensions can be reverted to their more neutral colour by using the opposite colour on the colour wheel to help tone away. When seeing orange or pinkish tones, purple shampoos or blue shampoos for brunettes are key to combating colour discolouration in hair extensions. Speak to your hairdresser and see what salon grade toners she can use also.

Nourishing the hair extensions will help maintain their colour and prevent harsh factors contributing to the colour discolouration. So, use a hydrating treatment to help and a leave-in moisturiser for day-to-day wear.
